Luteine American Marigold

Luteine American Marigold

Tagetes erecta, the African, also called: Mexican marigold and Aztec marigold, is a species of the genus Tagetes originating from Mexico and Central America. Although this plant originates in the Americas, it is usually called African marigold or African.

The main active components in the African are Lutein and Zeaxanthin. Lutein and Zeaxanthin have identical chemical formulas and are isomers, but not stereo isomers. The only difference is the place of a double binding in one of the end rings. Because of this difference, Lutein has three chiral centers while Zeaxanthin has two.
As a general antioxidant, Lutein works with other antioxidants in the process of preventing the harmful effects of oxidation processes and fighting free radicals in the body. Lutein is known to have specific properties for the eye, is important for supporting the condition of the eye and supports in aging of the eye.

Lutein is mainly used in eye care products to relieve visual fatigue, red and burning eyes and in teary eyes. The powerful antioxidant Zeaxanthin is good to see sharply. Zeaxanthin is a staple of the macular pigment in the retina. Zeaxanthin occurs mainly in the middle of the yellow spot (macula lutea), the main area for central vision. Zeaxanthin also occurs in the brain and other organs.
