The word oregano is derived from the Spanish word orégano, the Latin organumm and the Greek oregano. It is a composition of óros, “mountain” and gános, “brightness”, it is therefore often translated as “the brightness of the mountain”. Oregano has long been used in various herbal leather traditions and is especially beneficial to the digestive system. TCM uses it because of its stomach strengthening influence and to help the digestive system. Oregano has been used in herbal leather since the ancient Greeks. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks used it for supple muscles. Hippocrates used it as an antiseptic.

Oregano leaves contain more than 40 different substances. Many of these substances belong to phytonutrient classes called polyphenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins, all of which are recognized because of their antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect the body’s cells from free radicals.
